New Stuff

Working on the new CD has been an extremely liberating process - cathartic, even. It's not exactly belly dance, or sometimes even electronica, really.

The next CD will be called "Falik's Revenge". It occurred to me one day that people often call me Falik - which is my fault, because I created the character to perform at faires and gigs. Well, if this is an alter ego, then Falik would probably also have an ego, as well. So here goes...

Falik's a little upset at me impersonating him all this time, making him appear at malls and coffee shops and what-not, but never giving hm a real voice, like he's my puppet, ot something. So Falik decides one day to make me do what he wants to do. Well, Falik is a bit of a rocker and he wants to prove that he can do more than jockey a computer and splice loops. So the next CD is his "revenge" on me.

Like I said, he's got a bit of an ego so he would really like it if you dropped him a note, show him some love. He may not return it, but he might write a song about. He can be such an ass sometimes.

Xara Dulzura

I just got back from Xara Dulura ( http://XaraDulzura.tribe.net ), an annual regional Burning Man event, and I've got to say I had a blast. I even got to perform in the plaza, which brings me to the main reason of this post. I would like to thank Alexiis for being who the hell she is. Her will and strength moves mountains and I am grateful for her existence.

We were supposed to have performed together in the cafe but logistics not (seemingly) under our control were providing a barrier to our poceding. Of course Alexiis finds the right person to talk to whom she introduces me to, and sure as I'm standing here he gives me time on the main stage a half an hour from then. The only caveat is that Alexiis and Justin have to leave! Which sucks, but it was for a great reason (Congrats again, Alexiis!).

Sure enough, a half an hour later I get my cue and I'm playing! I had decided to perform from the cafe because I already had my gear all set up and I wanted to keep things as simple as possible. I decided to play "Locovenido", "When i Look Inter Her Eyes", and "Son of Sand Flea". Everything was working out great. Folks were getting into "Locovenido", and I was well into "When I Look" when the cafe surge protector blew and I lost power. Fortunately only about two minutes went by before it kicked back on. My laptop's battery had kicked in as soon as the power went off, so when it came back on I was a minute into "Son of Sand Flea" and was able to pick right up.

None of that would have been possible without Alexiis' will and determination in "setting the stage".

Creative Commons

I want you to use my music for paid performances! To that end, I would be extremely happy to send you free any promotional materials you would like, including CDs at a very discounted rate!

There is typically a fee for using my music where the user receives payment for services rendered. (Imagine your reaction if you entered a room where everyone had paid - unbeknownst to you - $5 to someone else to watch a video of you dancing.) However, I will happily waive that fee AS LONG AS YOU CONTACT ME PRIOR to your FIRST performance. Something like, "Hey Falik, I like song X and I'm thinking about using it at my restaurant gig." What this will do is allow me to post on my site that you are using my music. I can put up a link to your site from mine! So, please drop me line: cc@falikshow.com

As most of you know I publish all my work through the Creative Commons License. What this means to people interested in using my music in their own projects is that they are FREE to do so as long as

1) they are not getting paid directly for the performance of the music
2) they annouce and/or publicize the musical source

Any incorporation of my product into your final product means that your product becomes a Creative Commons product, as well. Any performance or demonstration of your product becomes usable by anyone else as long as the copier gives credit to the source.

Common examples of non-commercial uses:

- any dancing performance where you are not getting paid
- anything a student makes while attending school (i.e. homework)
- demos, resume and other samples by individuals, even if they're being used to get a job or solicit contracts (we assume you'll want to use our music at your job once you get one)
- films that are being shown in places where no admission fee is charged
- GNU/Berkeley/OSI licensed games or software that are given away for free (or included incidentally inside a larger distribution, even in a pay-distribution)
- Remixes that are given away for free (we're active participants in CC mixter)
- Podcasts and video blogs

It's New Bohemian!

I've struggled with trying to come up with an apt catchy description of my music, but I think it's been under my nose the whole time. Now if someone asks me what kind of music I do from now I'm saying "New Bohemian" - an artistic musical expression that disregards stanadards of behaviour. My music is too organic to be called "electronica", not "traditional" enough to be called "ethnic", too eclectic to be called "world", too contemporary to be called "new age", too edgey to be called "new jazz", too "plugged-in" to be called "folk". I've been shunned by every venue and act that claims to be "about" any particular genre, so I'm creating my own. Most folks who like my stuff are themselves artists, dancers, scultors, painters, writers, etc. Also, techies, and eeducators, believe it or not. Basically, all free thinkers, folks who don't require labels to tell them what they like.

So I've picked a label which stands for artistic non-conformity.

ATS Article Critique

I just finished reading “A History of American Tribal Style Bellydance *
by Rina Orellana Rall, principal dancer FCBD, 1988-1998” (http://www.fcbd.com/html/history_rr.html).

I understand that even though the author’s account of more recent history may be tainted somewhat by the author’s own involvement, but the account seems to ring true. What I find disconcerting is the lack of reference to the musical constructs employed other than some brief mention of styles. Granted, the author is a dancer, and not a musical historian, but I can’t help but feel let down that the influence of music in the evolution of the dance could be relegated to a footnote. O course I would feel jilted - I am a musician. Nevertheless, I believe that in order for one to evolve, so must the other. You can separate the dance from the music, and the music from the dance, certainly, but the influence of one upon the other – either by accident, or intentional – needs to be documented and given importance in a manner consistent with the previously mentioned article.

I just got an email from some filmmakers who used "Inner Child" in "Mussu", an Austrailian documentary short about a refugee who survived the Sierra Leone civil war.

The film was a finalist in the Austrailian Harmony Film Festival.

anyhow so I'm jam'n to my new Falik (tm) stuff and Akira asks me...."daddy what's a FLEEEK" and I say to her "It's charlie baby and it's FALIK" so she says "I thought his name was charlie" so i corrected her mistake and she said "can I hear sum more "a-flea-k" what could I do she loves the stuff (so do I) thank a million it makes it a little easier hav'n a bit of home out here.

Organizational Size Matters

A major research institution recently announced the discovery of the
heaviest element yet known to science. This new element has been tentatively
named, "Administratium."

Administratium has one neutron, 12 assistant neutrons, 75 deputy neutrons
and 111 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.

These 312 particles are held together by a force called morons, which are
surrounded by vast quantities of particles called peona. Since
Administratium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected as
it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact.

A minute amount Administratium causes one reaction to take over four days to
complete when it would normally take less than a second.

Administratium has a normal half-life of three years; it does not decay but
instead undergoes a reorganization, in which a portion of the assistant
neutrons and deputy neutrons and assistant neutrons exchange places.

In fact, Administratium's mass actually increases over time, since each
reorganization causes some morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes. This
moron-promoting characteristic has led some scientists to speculate that
Administratium is formed whenever morons reach a certain quantity in
concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as, "Critical
Morass." You will know when you see it.
